-The total export volume of Cambodian garment products increased sharply by more than % compared with the same period last year
In the first four months of this year (2011), Cambodia’s total export volume of garment products surged by more than 40% compared with the same period last year.
According to data provided by the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce, Cambodia’s exports of garment products totaled approximately US$1.2 billion in the first four months of this year, a sharp increase of more than 40% from US$846 million in the same period last year.
Shekhamala, director of the Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia (GMAC), said that with the recovery of the global economy and the increase in demand from new markets in Asia, the export volume of Cambodia’s garment industry products has shown an upward trend in the first four months.
“These new Asian markets include Japan, China and South Korea.” He said that since the United States and European Union countries were hit by the financial crisis, Cambodia’s garment industry is currently actively looking for new markets in the region to further promote the development of the garment industry.
In any case, he pointed out that the current price of gasoline is rising, and the price of imported raw materials is also rising, but the growth rate of Cambodia’s garment industry has not achieved relative growth.
In addition, Quang Bu Thela, Director of Statistics of the Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia, revealed that the total exports of Cambodian garment products to the United States in the first quarter of this year reached US$654 million, compared with US$522 million in the same period last year. An increase of 25.3%.
In addition, the total volume of garment products exported from Cambodia to EU countries reached US$329 million, an increase of 78.32% from US$184 million in the same period last year.
The total export of ready-made garments from Cambodia to other countries reached US$244 million, an increase of 77.53% from US$139 million in the same period last year.
The Cambodian Garment Manufacturers Association recently predicted that with the recovery of the global economy and the tariff-free benefits provided by the EU, Cambodia’s exports of garment products are expected to grow by 25% this year.
