Sudan’s cotton exports are expected to reach US$100 million
According to Sudanese media reports, Abdeen Mohammed Ali, general manager of Sudan Cotton Company, expects cotton export revenue in 2011 to reach US$700 million. The main reason for the surge in cotton export revenue is that the 408,000 acres of mechanical sprinkler-irrigated land and 20,000 acres of rain-irrigated land that have been sown in 2011 will achieve a bumper harvest. The general manager also said that the increase in cotton export revenue will partially offset the impact of reduced oil revenue. At the same time, the cotton company also paid cotton farmers 100 million Sudanese pounds as subsidies.
