High value-added textiles drive Pakistan’s exports higher
According to Pakistan’s “Dawn” report on September 21, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) recently released export data from July to August, showing that the growth of high value-added textile exports is the main reason for rising exports. The report pointed out that Pakistan’s total exports increased by 11.8% to US$3.49 billion from July to August, of which textile exports increased by 5.9% to US$2.18 billion, and non-textile exports increased by 23.5% to US$1.31 billion. Among textiles, exports of high value-added garments, knitwear and bedding increased by 15.65%, 7.53% and 8% respectively to US$420 million, 440 million and 380 million US dollars; while intermediate products (such as cotton yarn, cotton cloth) and low value-added textiles (such as carding, tents) exports fell by 4% and 100% respectively. Officials from the Ministry of Commerce pointed out that the growth in exports of high value-added textiles is due to policy support on the one hand, and the preferential export to the EU through the EU GSP+ program on the other.
