The 2021 seminar on antibacterial, anti-odor/deodorizing technology and its application in the sock industry was held in Shanghai

The 2021 seminar on antibacterial, anti-odor/deodorizing technology and its application in the sock industry was recently held in Shanghai. This seminar was organized by Zhongguancun Huizhi AntibacterialNew Materials Industry Technology Innovation Alliance (hereinafter referred to as the “Antibacterial Industry Alliance”) and the Antibacterial Industry Branch of the National Health Industry Enterprise Management Association (hereinafter referred to as the “Antibacterial Industry Alliance”) “Antibacterial Association”) co-organized by Microban International (Asia) Co., Ltd., Guangdong Microbial Analysis and Testing Center, Quanzhou Invisible Shield Shoes and Clothing Technology Co., Ltd., Shanghai Runhe Nano Technology Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Aige Exhibition Service Co., Ltd. Co-organized. Under the chairmanship of Mr. Zhang Yingzeng, Secretary General of the Antimicrobial Industry Alliance/Antimicrobial Association, representatives from the Guangdong Provincial Institute of Microbiology, Donghua University, SGS-CSTC Standards Technical Services Co., Ltd., Microban International (Asia) Co., Ltd., Experts from Shanghai Aili Textile Technology Inspection Co., Ltd., Quanzhou Invisible Shield Shoes and Clothing Technology Co., Ltd. and other units shared antibacterial technology and its latest applications in the sock industry with more than 80 on-site guests.

01 Antibacterial, anti-odor and deodorizing technology creates a healthy and fresh wearing environment

Socks are worn on the feet. There are more than 250,000 sweat glands in the feet, and sweat secretion is very strong, reaching more than 500 ml per day. In addition to water, sweat also contains lactic acid, uric acid and other substances that are easy to produce odor. The feet have been in a closed environment for a long time, creating a very suitable environment for the growth of microorganisms, and the cuticle of the skin shed by the feet provides rich nutrients for microorganisms, so microorganisms can breed and multiply in large numbers on the feet. Researcher Xie Xiaobao from the Guangdong Institute of Microbiology analyzed the number and types of microorganisms on the feet on the theme of “The Impact of Antibacterial Socks on the Microbial Flora of the Foot and Its Deodorizing Effect”. On this basis, he also analyzed the antibacterial and deodorizing properties of the feet. Linear relationships are illustrated.

A large number of microorganisms that breed and multiply will corrode socks, reduce the physical and chemical properties of socks and reduce the service life of socks. At the same time, these microorganisms will also decompose lactic acid and urea in the stratum corneum of the skin and sweat, producing metabolites containing various odors, resulting in foot odor. According to research, more than 70% of people’s foot odor is caused by the excessive growth and reproduction of microorganisms. Therefore, it is very necessary to control microorganisms on textiles.

Antibacteria is the process of using physical, chemical and other methods to kill microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, etc. and/or hinder the growth, reproduction and activity of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, etc. (Source: T/CIAA 101- 2021 Antibacterial Terminology). Antibacterial treatment of socks can effectively inhibit the proliferation of microorganisms on socks and keep their numbers at a low level, thereby creating a fresh and healthy foot wearing environment for consumers.

Professor Sun Bin of Donghua University took “Construction of Organic Molecular Hybrid Metal-based Nanomaterials and Application and Development of Antimicrobial Functional Materials” as the theme. He studied the organic molecule hybrid metal-based nanoantibacterial materials and Its application in the hosiery industry is introduced. Manager Yuan Fang of Microban International (Asia) Co., Ltd. took the theme of “Using antibacterial and odor control technology to redefine the cleanliness of sock products” and conducted research on the odor of socks of Microban International (Asia) Co., Ltd., and Antibacterial and odor control technologies developed based on this are introduced.

02 Performance and evaluation of antibacterial and anti-odor/deodorant socks

As a subcategory of socks, antibacterial and deodorant/deodorant socks have always attracted market attention. In recent years, consumer associations and relevant departments at all levels have continued to conduct market sampling inspections of antibacterial, deodorant/deodorant socks. The latest market sampling inspection was jointly carried out by Jiangsu Radio and Television United SCS Standards Technical Service Co., Ltd. To this end, Ms. Chen Jian, the antibacterial testing project manager of SGS-CSTC Standards Technical Services Co., Ltd., spoke about “Testing and Evaluation of Antibacterial and Deodorant Socks – From the Actual Measurement of Antibacterial Socks on the E-commerce Platform” 》as the theme, the sampling inspection situation was introduced.

So, how to evaluate the performance of antibacterial and deodorant socks?

In order to allow consumers and colleagues in the sock industry to better understand the performance and evaluation methods of antibacterial and deodorant socks, Ms. Chen Jian also specially introduced the performance evaluation standard for antibacterial and deodorant socks – the “Antibacterial and Deodorant Socks” group standard. The group standard was proposed by the Antibacterial Industry Branch of the National Health Industry Enterprise Management Association, and was jointly sponsored by Zhejiang Kangjiesi New Material Technology Co., Ltd., Quanzhou Invisible Shield Shoes Co., Ltd.The degree of protection is not enough; the number of patent applications related to antibacterial and deodorant socks is low, and corporate patent awareness still needs to be enhanced. The people who pay attention to antibacterial and deodorant socks are mainly concentrated in the economically developed areas of the southeastern coastal areas.

Through research on the industry, it can be found that up to now, the mainstream brands of antibacterial and deodorant socks are not the mainstream brands in the traditional socks industry. At the same time, there is still a lack of leading brands in the field of antibacterial and anti-odor socks. From a business model perspective, although antibacterial and deodorant socks are a category of socks driven by micro-business, micro-business is no longer the mainstream sales model for antibacterial and deodorant socks. In addition to micro-business, many antibacterial and deodorant socks brands have opened up business models such as e-commerce and offline supermarkets, and new business models such as Douyin live broadcast are also being explored.
