Myanmar’s garment sales hit US$100 million
According to a report by the Global New Light of Myanmar on February 11, officials from the Ministry of Commerce of Myanmar said that the sales of Myanmar’s garment enterprises this fiscal year reached US$7 billion. It is reported that there are currently 389 garment factories, including 171 local private enterprises, 196 foreign-invested enterprises, and 22 joint ventures, employing a total of more than 400,000 workers. Japan has the largest share of ready-made garment exports, accounting for 23%, followed by the European Union, South Korea, the United States and China. Recently, Myanmar has regained the EU’s Generalized System of Preferences, and orders from the EU have increased significantly. It may surpass Japan to become Myanmar’s largest importer of garments. The export volume of the garment industry is expected to increase year by year, creating more job opportunities for local people. As of the end of December in this fiscal year (starting April 1), garment exports have exceeded US$7 billion, an increase of more than US$1 billion over the same period last year.
