This article focuses on Pakistan’s zero-tariff import of textiles from China under FTA
According to Pakistan’s “Business Record” report, Pakistan’s Minister of Commerce and the Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan held talks in Islamabad a few days ago. During the talks, the Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan expressed concern about Pakistan’s zero-tariff import of textiles and machinery products from China under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA), and believed that this tariff preference affected the market share of Japanese products in Pakistan. At the same time, due to insufficient supply and increased imports from China, the share of Pakistani textiles in the Japanese market is also decreasing. The report pointed out that Pakistan and Japan may negotiate a comprehensive trade agreement to solve the problem of declining market share.
According to reports, Pakistan mainly exports aviation fuel, cotton yarn, textile fabrics, seafood, leather clothing, carpets, etc. to Japan; it mainly imports automobiles and parts, textile machinery, telecommunications equipment, construction machinery, and flat materials from Japan. In 1960, the two countries granted each other most-favored-nation status.
