Jordan’s garment industry enters trough
According to the “Jordan Times” report, the purchasing power and import and export trade of Jordan’s garment industry have dropped significantly.
Sudan Allen, chairman of the Garment Trade Association, said seasonal promotions and offers cannot help clothing traders recover from the financial crisis. Clothing industry sales fell by an average of 40% in Amman bazaars, 50% in shopping malls and 60% across the province. The garment industry in Ma’an, Irbid and other provinces is also “paralyzed”. The value of Jordanian clothing imports dropped from JD 275 million in the first nine months of 2015 to JD 232 million in the same period of 2016, a decrease of nearly 16%. Export value also dropped from JD 48 million in January-September 2015 to JD 36 million in the same period in 2016. Consumers purchased an average of 4 items of clothing in 2016, compared with 5 items in 2015. Taxes, tariffs, high rents, random licensing of stores, and the absence of relevant laws to mediate market sales and supply have caused losses to the industry.
