The textile industry has become a “stabilizer” for foreign trade exports
Over the past 40 years of reform and opening up, the textile industry has maintained stable and healthy development, playing a stabilizer role in previous economic fluctuations, and its status as a pillar industry has never been shaken. In 1978, the export volume of the textile industry was US$2.154 billion, accounting for 22.1% of the country’s total exports; in 1994, my country became the world’s largest exporter of textiles and clothing, and it remains so today; in 2017, the export volume of textiles and clothing was US$274.51 billion, 127.4 times that of 1978 , accounting for 12.13% of the country’s total exports and 36.8% of the global textile and apparel trade. The industry’s net foreign exchange earnings were US$241.9 billion, accounting for 57.3% of the country’s total.
The textile industry is committed to improving people’s livelihood and serving the people. In the areas of people’s livelihood such as food, clothing, housing and transportation, clothing can best meet the needs of people’s lives, and the status of the people’s livelihood industry has become increasingly prominent. The industry has created a large number of jobs. In 1978, the number of employees in the textile industry was 3.112 million, accounting for 7.2% of the country’s industrial enterprises. In 2017, the industry-wide employment population exceeded 20 million. In 2015, 9.462 million people were employed in enterprises above designated size, accounting for 10% of the country’s large-scale industries.
The textile industry insists on opening up to the outside world and promoting the best in and out. It has grown into a core force supporting the smooth operation of the world’s textile industry system, and its status as an industry with international competitive advantages has become more prominent. According to WTO statistics, China’s textile exports accounted for 37.20% of the world’s textile exports in 2016, and China’s clothing exports accounted for 36.40% of the world’s clothing exports.
The textile industry and the majority of textile enterprises rely on the Canton Fair as a platform and bridge to continue to go global. As a window for China to look at the world and for the world to understand China, the Canton Fair has witnessed and contributed to the great achievements of China’s textile industry in growing into a world textile power. With the continuous deepening of reform and opening up, the Canton Fair will also provide more small and medium-sized textile and garment enterprises with opportunities to explore the international market.
The textile and apparel industry plays an important role in promoting my country’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative. As a basic livelihood industry, the textile and apparel industry is an important area that many Belt and Road countries are eager to develop industry. It is also the most operable, popular and industry that can produce significant win-win results. In the process of “going out” in the textile industry in recent years, the industry has exported advanced equipment, superior production capacity, and successful experience to “One Belt and One Road” countries and regions in need, extending the local industrial chain, constantly filling development gaps, and promoting local economy and Social development.
