TreeToTextile will establish a demonstration factory to expand the production of new regenerated cellulose fibers
H&M Group’s Swedish joint venture TreeToTextile will invest 35 million euros (approximately US$42.6 million) to establish a demonstration factory in Sweden to expand the production of new regenerated cellulose fibers; the fiber Made from renewable and sustainable raw materials.
TreeToTextile was founded in 2014. Its partners include: IKEA, pulp and paper company StoraEnso, and LSCSInvest. It provides a new technology that can produce bio-based textile fibers with a low environmental footprint at a reasonable cost.
TreeToTextile uses technology that reduces the use of energy, chemicals and water compared to the production of traditional fibers. The process is carefully designed to require less energy and chemicals and is suitable for mass production; it also includes a chemical recycling and reuse system.
The demonstration factory will be located in the Nymälla factory of StoraEnso Company in southern Sweden. It is estimated to cost 35 million euros to build; of which the owner’s investment is 27.4 million euros. Sweden The Energy Agency invested 7.6 million euros.
The plant has an estimated production capacity of 1,500 tons per year and will be launched in the spring of 2021.
H&M stated that this initiative represents the commercialization of sustainable textile fibers with scalable technology and lower manufacturing costs.
Joel Ankarberg, director of H&M Group Strategy and Transformation Department, pointed out: The investment and construction of the demonstration factory is an important milestone for TreeToTextile and paves the way for the commercialization of sustainable fibers. It is in line with the circular vision of H&M Group and also benefits the overall textile industry.
