Expert team evaluates cotton display varieties in the field

On June 20, the Agricultural Science Institute of the Third Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps invited five experts from the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Reclamation Sciences and the Agricultural Science Institute of the First Division to form an expert team and go to the 44th Regiment and the 45th Division. The three areas of Tuanhe Jiashi General Field have carried out cotton variety bud period evaluation work to further promote the development of cotton production in Tumushuk City of the Third Division in the direction of high yield, high quality and efficiency.

In the test field, the expert team conducted a comprehensive score based on six indicators including growth potential, uniformity, stress resistance, and seedling diseases, to understand the growth characteristics of different cotton varieties during the budding period, and to evaluate the regional adaptability of the displayed varieties. By carrying out variety evaluation work during critical growth periods, data support will be provided for the selection of “one main and two auxiliary” cotton varieties in the city in 2024.

This year, the Institute of Agricultural Sciences of the Third Division introduced high-quality cotton varieties from many well-known seed companies and conducted variety display trials in different cotton planting areas of the Third Division. Focusing on the goal of establishing a high-quality machine-picked cotton production technology system in southern Xinjiang, Tumushuk City of the Third Division carried out new cotton variety display tests, screened suitable machine-picked cotton varieties, and promoted new cotton varieties, demonstrations and training of new technologies. We will provide scientific and technological services in other aspects, and strive to promote the highquality development of the cotton industry.

Kong Xianhui, director of the Tumushuke Agricultural Science and Technology Research and Development Center of the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences and director of the Agricultural Science Institute of the Third Division, said: “In the past two years, the city has actively promoted the dry sowing and wet cultivation model of cotton. We have to select a method that is suitable for the current situation. Cultivation technology, while yield and quality can be synergistically improved varieties. To this end, this year, 17 early and mid-maturing cotton varieties were introduced from Beijing, Chengdu, Xinjiang City of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps and the local seed industry for comprehensive evaluation, and will be used for next year’s first year. Provide scientific basis for the recommendation of main and two auxiliary varieties.”

Researcher Lin Hai of the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Reclamation Sciences who participated in the evaluation said: “We have been working hard on the cultivation of cotton varieties. From the seed industry, we still need various breeding research institutions and production enterprises in Xinjiang to work together to carry out Joint breeding will select high-quality varieties suitable for local areas and promote the high-quality development of the cotton industry.”
