Textile waste shortage in Bangladesh

According to Bangladesh’s “Daily Star” report on January 16, as many clothing retailers and brands (such as H&M) consider environmental factors and prefer the reuse and recycling of clothing , but Bangladeshi textile mills are facing a shortage of waste cotton and textile waste.

Bangladesh is the world’s second largest clothing producer and has a large amount of cotton textile waste, but this waste is usually dumped into landfills, incinerated, exported or Recycled into low-quality fabrics. As global demand for recycled yarn and fabric increases, and due to higher purchase prices abroad, most of Bangladesh’s textile waste is shipped abroad rather than sold in the local market. In the second half of last year, Bangladesh’s textile waste shipments increased by 49.67% year-on-year to US$153.38 million. This forces textile mills to buy recycled yarn from the international market, meaning local manufacturers pay more for imported goods they already have locally. If local recycling is achieved, imports may be reduced by about 15%, saving US$500 million annually.
