Technology assists spring plowing, cotton land preparation and sowing are beginning one after another across the country
At present, cotton land preparation and sowing are beginning one after another across the country.
As an important step before cotton sowing, the central government will increase the construction of high-standard cotton fields this year, allowing “small strips” and “patches” to be connected into large fields, giving cotton farmers more hope for farming.
In the 20,000 acres of cotton fields in Bachu County, Kashgar Prefecture, Xinjiang, multiple excavators, bulldozers, and tractors are working on leveling the vast fields. The uneven land in the cotton fields has been cut high, filled in low, and concentrated.
Bachu is an important cotton-producing area in southern Xinjiang. Since 2018, with the support of the Ministry of Finance and the National Supply and Marketing Cooperatives, China Supply and Marketing Corporation has invested a total of 16 million yuan in special funds for the “New Network Project” to Bachu. The county carried out intensive transformation of high-standard cotton fields by “leveling the land, laying out drip irrigation, and building facilities”, integrating more than 300 scattered plots into about 30 contiguous plots of land, realizing full mechanization of cotton fields and efficient water-saving irrigation.
High-standard farmland construction is also equipped with water-saving drip irrigation technology, which solves the “water” dispute. According to the needs of cotton and other crops, the local area uses precise dripping of fertilizers to the roots of crops to save water, improve fertilizer utilization, and increase production and income.
Li Weidong, agronomist of the Ministry of Agriculture and Welfare of the Xinjiang Branch of China Agricultural Corporation: (per mu) Water saving is more than 50% and water and electricity bills are saved about 100 yuan.
The land is flat, the soil is fertile, the fields are square, connected by canals, can be irrigated during droughts, and can be drained during floods… So far, Bachu County has built a total of 400,000 acres of high-standard farmland, accounting for nearly a quarter of the county’s cultivated land area.
Guo Xihai, head of China Cotton Group Xinjiang Agriculture Co., Ltd.: This year, we also plan to continue to promote high-standard farmland construction in several major cotton-producing counties in southern Xinjiang and provide cotton farmers with free soil testing formulas and fertilization plans.
The latest survey results of the China Cotton Association show that the intended cotton planting area nationwide in 2022 is 43.176 million acres. In terms of regions, the planting area in the Yellow River Basin and the Yangtze River Basin has tended to be stable, and the intended area of Xinjiang cotton areas has increased by 2% year-on-year. All regions are increasing scientific and technological services to ensure the smooth progress of cotton sowing work.
