Xinjiang: Cotton topping time is approaching and field management is strengthened

In June, most cotton areas in Xinjiang have good weather, with daytime temperatures maintained at 25-35 degrees, which is conducive to the rapid growth of cotton. At the end of the month, the number of cotton plants blooming increases significantly, and most cotton plants are currently 60-70 cm tall.

Due to the postponement of the overall sowing period this year, the unfavorable weather during the planting stage and other factors, and the obviously slow growth of re-sown cotton, the topping time in most areas of Xinjiang this year is expected to be concentrated around July 10, one week later than in previous years. For cotton farmers, cotton topping has always adhered to the principle of “when the branches arrive, the branches will not wait when the time arrives.” Therefore, since mid-June, many growers have strengthened field management and tried to make up for the early growth gap.

This year, cotton in some areas of northern Xinjiang was mainly affected by disastrous weather such as sudden rainfall, snow, and low temperature during the planting period. As a result, cotton seedlings unearthed shortly after sowing were frostbitten and died of frostbite, forcing cotton farmers to resow or replant. The early disaster-stricken areas in northern Xinjiang were mainly concentrated in Kuitun, Shawan, Hami and other places. The impact on Bole and Wusu was relatively small. However, this benefited from the rapid rise in temperature after late May and the timely application of pesticides by growers to control aphids, cotton bollworms and Red spider mites and other diseases and insect pests, while strengthening the supplement of water and fertilizer to promote the vegetative and reproductive growth of cotton. Currently, the number of fruit branches of replanted cotton is 5-7, which is only 1-2 fruit branches different from the unaffected cotton.

This year, many places in the Aksu and Kashgar regions of southern Xinjiang encountered continuous heavy rainfall and sandstorms during the planting period, resulting in soil compaction and cotton seedling breakage in cotton fields. Some areas have been reseeded multiple times, so the overall growth progress On the slow side.

Cotton farmers in many places said that this year’s topping work can only be flexibly adjusted according to the actual situation, and will not blindly adopt the rule of “when the branches are not ready, when the time is not right”. For cotton that is not affected by the disaster, topping will be carried out according to the normal progress, but for obviously slow-moving cotton plants, water and fertilizer management will continue to be strengthened to promote growth to the topping standard. For cotton with delayed topping, the time will be appropriately relaxed again when the leaves are finally harvested to ensure quality and yield targets.
