Usually, the methods of heat transfer include thermal convection, heat transfer, thermal radiation, and a combination of two or three of the above methods. Therefore, in the practical application of thermal protective clothing, thermal protective clothing should have different thermal protection properties for different purposes and environments. But in general, thermal protective clothing must have thermal protective properties such as flame retardancy, thermal insulation, integrity and resistance to liquid penetration.
The thermal protection performance of thermal protective clothing can be tested and evaluated through certain test methods. Extensive research has been carried out in this area at home and abroad, and regulations have been formulated. Corresponding test methods and standards have been established. The research on the thermal protection performance testing methods of domestic thermal protective clothing focused on the testing and evaluation of the flame retardant performance of thermal protective clothing in the early stage.
At present, my country has established relatively complete fabric flame retardant performance testing methods and standards, including vertical method, horizontal method, oxygen index method, 45° Inclination method, smoke concentration method, etc. In the flame retardant performance test of thermal protective clothing, our country draws on similar foreign standards and adopts the vertical method for testing and evaluation, that is, measuring indicators such as fabric afterburning time, smoldering time, and damage length. At the same time, our country has also formulated the national standard “Determination of Thermal Protection Properties and Molten Metal Impact Resistance of Thermal Protective Fabrics”. In the Ministry of Public Security’s industry standard “Performance Requirements and Test Methods for Firefighters’ Ordinary Protective Clothing and Insulation Clothing”, a test method for the radiation heat penetration resistance of protective clothing was formulated. A fabric thermal radiation performance tester and a fabric thermal conductivity tester were developed for testing and evaluation of thermal protection performance.
