Bangladeshi textiles and clothing enjoy tariff-free entry into Malaysia
Approximately 300 Bangladeshi products have received tariff-free entry into the Malaysian market.
Malaysia is the largest tourist shopping mall in Asia. In order to occupy a place on the world map, Dhaka Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) officials announced that the Malaysian government has canceled tariffs on imported goods from Bangladesh.
Clothing, blankets, suits, tablecloths, children’s clothing, bedspreads, curtains, underwear, intimate clothing, evening wear and mosquito nets are included in the list, and these products receive tariff-free entry into Malaysia.
Earlier, the import duty on clothing and hats was 5-20%, while the duty on bedsheets, curtains, blankets and tablecloths was 10-20%.
In 2010, Malaysia agreed to tariff-free entry of 19 Bangladeshi export products into the Malaysian market if Bangladesh agreed to start negotiating a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA).
Currently, Malaysia is one of Bangladesh’s major trading partners, with exports of goods to Malaysia amounting to approximately US$35 million in the 2009-10 fiscal year.
