Pakistan SNGPL decides to supply gas to textile industry on weekly basis
According to Pakistan’s “National” report, Pakistan’s Sui Northern Natural Gas Pipeline Company (SNGPL) recently decided to compromise with the All Pakistan Textile Association (APTMA) and supply natural gas to Pakistani textile factories five days a week. APTMA had previously strongly opposed SNGPL’s proposal to reduce gas supply to four days per week and called on the government to take measures to save the textile industry. To this end, Petroleum Minister DrAsim Hussain directed SNGPL to supply gas to the textile industry five days a week starting from July 10, 2011.
APTMA Chairman Gohar Ejaz said that restricting the supply of natural gas to the textile industry will endanger the industry and affect the livelihoods of 15 million textile industry workers. Pakistan’s textile industry suffered a summer gas outage for the first time in 2011, resulting in a significant 43% reduction in production capacity since April 2011. He also said that Pakistan’s textile industry is performing better than any other industry. Despite facing a serious energy crisis, Pakistan’s textile industry exports still reached US$14 billion in the last fiscal year, and there was no arrears in employee wages, bank loans and tax payables.
