According to reports, due to the rise in cotton prices in domestic and foreign markets, Pakistani farmers increased their planting area in 2011. Pakistani government officials said that Pakistan’s cotton planting area reached 3.2 million hectares (approximately 8.7 million acres) this fiscal year. Cotton output in Punjab is expected to reach 12 million bales, and in Sindh, cotton output will reach 4 million bales.
An official from the Pakistan Planning Commission said that Pakistan’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth target for the 2011/12 fiscal year is 4.2%, and its agricultural growth target is 3.6%. Since cotton is an important cash crop in Pakistan, the quality of its harvest will determine whether Pakistan can achieve its agricultural growth goals.
