Peru says that the price of clothing exported to it by China is on average % lower than that of products from other countries
According to a report by the Peruvian Andes News Agency on June 25, the Textile Committee of the Peruvian National Industry Association (SNI) stated that the price of 218 million pieces of clothing imported from China in 2011 was 58% lower on average than the prices offered by exporters from other countries. Enrique Falcone, chairman of the committee, believes that a large number of Chinese clothing products are exported to Peru at falsely low prices, and the prices of some products are even lower than the cost of raw materials, making it impossible for any company from this country or other countries to compete with Chinese manufacturers.
Therefore, the chairman supports an anti-dumping resolution recently passed by the Peruvian National Competition and Intellectual Property Protection Institute (INDECOPI) on protecting the country’s textile industry. After preliminary analysis, the Bureau determined that China’s exports of clothing, textiles and other products to Peru showed signs of causing damage to the Peruvian textile industry, and decided to launch an anti-dumping investigation into the above-mentioned products from China.
The chairman also said that although the Peruvian clothing and textile market has grown steadily in recent years, Chinese clothing exporters used dumping methods to gain a 22% share increase in Peru in 2011. This growth performance cannot be achieved even by the most profitable secret textile companies. This fact is obviously something that Chinese companies do not want to see. The low prices of Chinese clothing products not only affect the formal employment of employees and industry value creation, but also cause the loss of national tax revenue, reduction of industry investment, and the squeeze-out of small and medium-sized enterprises due to low prices. The dumping of Chinese clothing products into Peru has particularly adversely affected small and medium-sized Peruvian textile enterprises. For example, more than half of the clothing traders in the Gamarra clothing market in Lima were once small textile manufacturers, but are now reduced to second-tier dealers reselling Chinese clothing.
