Uzbekistan’s total cotton demand has accounted for % of its total cotton production
On October 27, the Uzbekistan News Network reported that Akmal Kamalov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Uzbekistan State Cotton Industry Export Company, stated at a news media release event that since Uzbekistan became independent 26 years ago, it has introduced advanced foreign technologies. With technological equipment and vigorous efforts to attract various types of investment, Uzbekistan’s textile industry has developed by leaps and bounds, and the construction of the textile industry system has also made great achievements. The total demand for cotton in the domestic market has accounted for less than 7% of Uzbekistan’s total cotton output from 1991, at the beginning of independence. It rose to 70% in 2017. During this period, the export volume of Uzbekistan’s textile light industry enterprises surged nearly 30 times.
Kamalov emphasized that from 2017 to 2020, by attracting foreign investment, raising its own funds, establishing joint ventures or wholly-owned enterprises, Uzbekistan plans to launch 150 light industrial product production projects totaling more than 2 billion U.S. dollars and put them into production. In the future, Uzbekistan’s light industrial product export capacity will be significantly enhanced, with the growth rate expected to exceed US$1.3 billion.
According to forecast data released by the Ministry of Economy of Uzbekistan, by 2021 Uzbekistan will achieve 100% domestic processing of cotton produced. By then, compared with 2016, Uzbekistan’s total output of textile and sewing knitted products will increase by 120%. Among them, finished fabrics increased by 170%, woven products by 200%, sewing and knitted products by 240%, and hosiery products by 270%, which will drive related exports to increase by 100%. Uzbekistan’s total cotton demand accounts for 70% of its total cotton production
