Yao embroidery costumes appear on the stage of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony
During the live broadcast of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony, Li Sufang stared closely at every shot. Finally, a familiar figure appeared on the screen – a long black dress, decorated with exquisite Yao embroidery patterns, and a tall flat-headed Yao bridal hat, which perfectly blended traditional national aesthetics with modern aesthetics. She called to her husband excitedly: “Look, our Yao embroidery costumes are on the stage at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics!”
Li Sufang is the autonomous-level inheritor of the national intangible cultural heritage representative project (Yao costumes). She has been learning Yao embroidery under the influence of her mother since she was a child. At the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics, the high-hat style Yao costume worn by Lan Yueqian, a girl from the Yao ethnic group in Hezhou City, was provided by Li Sufang. In October 2006, the Yao costumes represented by the Hezhou Yao costumes were included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage lists. Seeing a glimmer of hope for the inheritance of “intangible cultural heritage”, she returned to Hezhou from Hangzhou and devoted herself to the development of traditional Yao embroidery skills.
Li Sufang introduced that since 2019, we have been enjoying the bonus of being exempted from value-added tax; last year, tax officials launched a special campaign of “Spring Rain to Moisten Seedlings” and formulated a special tax preferential policy package to help us enjoy the “further reduction in income tax for small and micro enterprises” Preferential policies such as “semi-levy” have reduced a lot of burdens and given intangible cultural heritage enterprises a “green light” on the road to development. “Today, we adopt the ‘company + base + farmer’ model to drive more than 600 local poor households and returning migrant workers to find employment at home through orders, with the per capita annual income reaching 5,000 Yuan and above.” Li Sufang said: “The inheritance of national characteristic culture cannot be separated from the perseverance of the inheritors, and it is also inseparable from the strong support and help of the country. Every piece of Yao embroidery carries beautiful stories and meanings, and is promoting Yao embroidery. While inheriting the culture, it also brings economic benefits to the embroiderers and improves their lives.”
