Textile and apparel exports have experienced two consecutive negative growth
In the first month of the second quarter, overall exports of textiles and clothing continued to decline, with the downward trend in clothing becoming more obvious. According to data released by the General Administration of Customs, in RMB terms, textile and clothing exports in April were 136.17 billion yuan, a decrease of 8.7%, of which textile exports were 66.64 billion yuan, a decrease of 1.6%, and clothing exports were 69.53 billion yuan, a decrease of 14.6%. From January to April 2018, the cumulative exports of textiles and clothing were 509.58 billion yuan, a decrease of 2.5%, of which textile exports were 234.66 billion yuan, an increase of 4.2%, and clothing exports were 274.92 billion yuan, a decrease of 7.5%.
Due to the continued substantial appreciation of the RMB over the past year, there is a big difference between the year-on-year results in US dollar statistics and RMB statistics. The decline in US dollar terms is not significant. Textile and apparel exports in April were US$21.48 billion, down 0.6%, of which textile exports were US$10.51 billion, up 7.1%, and clothing exports were US$10.97 billion, down 7%. From January to April 2018, the cumulative exports of textiles and clothing were US$78.93 billion, an increase of 4.2%, of which textile exports were US$36.37 billion, an increase of 11.4%, and clothing exports were US$42.56 billion, a decrease of 1.2%.
