Aksu, Xinjiang: Pest control in cotton fields is in progress
Since May, as new cotton sowing in various parts of Xinjiang is coming to an end, the focus of cotton farmers has gradually shifted from sowing to field management.
In a cotton field in Wensu County, Aksu, Xinjiang, a cotton farmer is flying a drone to spray pesticides to prevent the breeding of insect pests such as thrips in the cotton field. The cotton farmer planted about 600 acres of cotton this year, which is the same as last year. Because of the better profits last year, he is more enthusiastic about planting cotton this year.
The cotton farmer’s farm is responsible for 20% of the grain growing tasks, so some local fields need to be replanted with wheat, corn and other food crops. Because the efficiency of growing grain is not as good as that of cotton, local cotton farmers need to provide 50 yuan/acre as a subsidy to farmers who grow grain. Regarding the purchase price this year, the cotton farmer said that he hopes the purchase price of seed cotton this year will be around 9 yuan/kg.
