Togo/cotton season cotton output reaches 10,000 tons
According to the 2010/2011 cotton season annual report of Togo New Cotton Company, Togo’s cotton output reached 46,800 tons that year, an excess of 17% and a year-on-year increase of 67.14%; the original planned cotton sowing area was 59,000 hectares, but the actual sowing area Reaching 60,360 hectares, 1,360 hectares were sown beyond plan; the average cotton yield per hectare reached 775 kilograms, an increase of 17.78% from 658 kilograms in the same period, and 26% of cotton farmers achieved a good harvest of more than 1,100 kilograms per hectare. The increase in output in this cotton season is mainly due to the optimistic international cotton market, the increase in cotton purchase price, the increase in the confidence of cotton farmers and the expansion of sowing area.
According to the cotton industry revitalization plan of the Ministry of Agriculture of Togo, the target cotton output for the 2011/2012 cotton season is 80,000 tons, and the sown area has been expanded to 85,000 hectares. The state provides a fertilizer subsidy price of 12,500 West African CFA francs (approximately US$26) per 50 kilograms.
