The Pakistan Garment Processing Factories Association calls on the government to curb the transfer of the garment processing industry to Bangladesh
According to Pakistan’s “News” report, the Pakistan Garment Processing Factories Association (PRGMEA) recently called on Pakistan’s Ministry of Textile Industry, Finance and Revenue Commission and other government departments to jointly take measures to curb the transfer of the garment processing industry to Bangladesh. A spokesman for PRGMEA said that some garment processing manufacturers in Pakistan have chosen to set up factories in Bangladesh, and a considerable number of Pakistani businessmen are inspecting the Bangladesh market. Bangladesh’s good access to Western markets and relatively complete support policies for the garment processing industry are important factors in attracting Pakistani businessmen.
PRGMEA stated that currently Bangladesh, major textile countries such as China and India all provide export tax refund systems to varying degrees for textile exports. The Pakistani government adopted similar policies in the 2010-2011 fiscal year, which pushed textile exports that year to a historical export record of US$14 billion; however, the Pakistani government withdrew the above-mentioned export support system from July 2011. PRGMEA calls on the government to continue to implement the system to keep related industries in Pakistan and maintain the export competitiveness of related products.
