Mexico imports Chinese denim accounting for % of total output
According to the Mexican Textile Industry Association (CANAINTEX), Mexico imports low-priced denim from mainland China for only US$0.27 per square meter. In the past two years, large amounts of low-priced imports have caused 7 Mexican companies to close their factories, resulting in the loss of 5,000 jobs. Employees have lost their jobs, and the production capacity of surviving businesses has also been reduced by 30% or 40%.
Rodolfo Garcia, chairman of the association, said that from 2007 to 2010, denim imports from mainland China increased by 236%. In 2007, denim made in mainland China accounted for 8.7% of the Mexican market. In 2010, it had reached 35.6%. In 2019, Mexico imported 98.994 billion square meters of denim from mainland China, accounting for 36% of Mexico’s total denim production.
Since 2011, 10 million square meters of denim have been imported from mainland China every month, and domestically produced denim has almost been replaced by products from mainland China. Chairman G also stated that the current average international cotton price is US$1.5 per pound and the production cost per square meter is US$0.96. However, the price of denim imported from mainland China is lower than the production cost. Therefore, he calls on the Mexican Ministry of Economy to Denim imported from mainland China is subject to anti-dumping duties.
