Mexico’s cotton production to double

In an effort to cope with soaring cotton prices, Mexico launched an initiative to establish its own clothing supply chain and reduce the country’s increasing clothing supply chain costs.

Under this plan, Mexico hopes to expand its cotton harvest area from the current 107,000 hectares to 300,000 hectares by 2016. The plan also sets a goal to increase cotton production from the current 620,000 bales to 1.4 million bales.

The growth of the textile industry this year is low and raw material prices are soaring. This plan will be a boon to the textile industry. Currently, Mexico needs to import 1.3 million bales of cotton to meet its textile production needs.

He said that cotton production contributed 0.7% to GDP and increased the wages of more than 500,000 producers.

Mexico’s yield is 6.4 bales per hectare, the third highest yield in the world. After Mexico increased its harvest rate, cotton yield increased from 4.62 bales/ha in 2000 to 6.4 bales/ha.
