The total amount of textile imports from ASEAN increased significantly in the first quarter

According to the “Domestic Chemical Fiber Industry Trends in the First Quarter of 2012” recently released by the Japan Chemical Fibers Association, Japan’s textile imports and exports to the ASEAN region have grown significantly, and the “China + 1” production system has generally penetrated into various manufacturing enterprises. At the same time, affected by the shrinking European and American markets, Japan’s domestic chemical fiber industry has also been under pressure from inventory growth.

In the first quarter of this year, Japan’s exports to the ASEAN region increased significantly, with textile exports reaching US$2.38 billion, a year-on-year increase of 4.9%. Among them, exports to China were US$830 million, a year-on-year decrease of 1%. Exports to Thailand increased by 27.5%, to Indonesia by 10.1%, to Malaysia by 1.5%, and to Vietnam by 16.9%. During the same period, Japan’s textile imports amounted to US$10.2 billion, a year-on-year increase of 7.9%. Among them, imports from China were US$7.24 billion, an increase of 5%. Imports from Vietnam increased by 30.5%, from Indonesia by 30%, and from Thailand by 2.6%. Total imports from ASEAN were US$1.42 billion, an increase of 27.1%. Overall, imports from ASEAN countries have shown rapid growth.

In the first quarter, Japan’s domestic chemical fiber production reached 247,000 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 3.3%. Among them, cellulose fiber was 44,000 tons, down 0.3%. Among the four main chemical fiber varieties, the output of polyester filament was 42,643 tons, down 6%. This is closely related to the shrinking exports of down jackets and outdoor high-density fabrics to the European and American markets and the growth of inventories. Affected by the energy-saving trend, the use of clothing lining fabrics has also declined. Due to resource shortages, the procurement period was advanced, resulting in delivery in the first quarter of 36,030 tons, which was the same as in previous years. Textile yarn production increased slightly year-on-year. Polyester staple fiber is expected to be slightly lower than previous years’ 39,261 tons. The output of nylon filament was approximately 25,112 tons, an increase of 5.7%.

Fabric output was 36.83 million square meters, a year-on-year increase of 15.4%. Sales of products such as seamless pantyhose and pantyhose are strong, and lightweight down products are relatively optimistic in large stores. The prosperity of the European outdoor market has declined, and the appreciation of the yen has had a great impact on the sales of such products. According to data released by the Japan Chemical Fiber Association on June 27, Japan’s chemical fiber output in May was 85,104 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 4.4%. It was also the seventh consecutive month of year-on-year decline. Among the main chemical fiber varieties, polyester filament was 15,034 tons, a slight increase of 0.7% year-on-year; polyester short fiber was 1.3115 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 3%; nylon filament was 8,326 tons, a year-on-year increase of 9.3%; resin S was 11,266 tons, down 20.4%.

Chemical fiber inventory was 95,079 tons, a month-on-month increase of 3.7%, and a year-on-year increase of 3.3%. Among the main varieties, polyester filament was 16,216 tons, an increase of 8.6% from the previous month. Polyester staple fiber was 24,237 tons, an increase of 4.6%; nylon filament was 9,654 tons, an increase of 0.1%; resin S was 17,350 tons, a decrease of 0.8%.
