Changning, Baoshan: Planting mulberries, raising silkworms, and weaving the “New Silk Road” to get rich
Spring returns to the earth and everything revives. Nowadays, it is a good season for planting new mulberries. When I walked into Laochang Community, Jianshui Town, Changning County, Yunnan Province, I saw neat rows of mulberry saplings planted in the fields.
It is understood that the newly planted mulberry seedlings this time are Qiangmulberry No. 1. This tree species is easy to cultivate and grow. The crown is relatively compact, the branches are thicker and longer than the agricultural mulberry series, the growth is vigorous, and the mulberry leaf yield is also higher than that of the agricultural mulberry series. , excellent leaf quality and strong adaptability. In order to reduce the evaporation of water, the mulberry seedlings should be covered with film after they are planted so that the mulberry seedlings can grow better.
The sericulture industry is one of the leading industries in Laochang Community. Since the development of sericulture in 2008, the village has developed more than 3,000 acres of mulberry gardens, and currently has more than 1,700 acres of sericulture area. Laochang Community raised a total of 630 silkworms in 2021, producing 24 tons of cocoons, with an average cocoon count of 38.1 kilograms, an average price of 47.28 yuan/kg, and an output value of 1.1349 million yuan. In recent years, people in the Laochang community have become more and more enthusiastic about sericulture, and have begun to pay attention to the management of old mulberry orchards and increase the planting of new ones. In 2022, more than 10 farmers will not only manage the old mulberry orchards well, but also Plant all idle land with mulberry seedlings.
“Now, the prospects for sericulture are getting better and better. Farmers must maximize the value of their land. Planting mulberry and raising sericulture is a good industry to increase people’s income.” said Zhao Xuejun, a sericulture counselor.
